searchable index of the web

Seems to me, that one of the things that makes the web an awkward
beast is the lack of a searchable index. It depends on folklore
to stay together. Hence, you have these post that come to this
mailer saying look here, look what I built. If you neglect to
add it to Marc's hotlist, well, hmmm, now where was that mud thingy.

Perhaps this already exists, and I missed it in the documentation.
If the developers put their stuff in directory trees made up of keywords:

http://myunixbox.edu/www/mud/thingy

Then, I can find him in the index when I search for thingy.
I'm sure this has all been covered, but howso? I missed it.
