If you are interested in an alternative to PDF that is superior in regards to maintaining small file sizes (albeit solely a Windows based product at this time), check out the RTC compression utility from Imagen Communications. It is a Rich-Text-Compressed page format that supports multi columns, hyperlinks, graphics, with the added advantage of small file sizes, and a http-enabled viewer that will have sound support built in once we release that Beta.

Granted, the only platform it runs on at present is Windows, but that will be addressed in upcoming releases of the viewer.
