ANNOUNCE: PNG now a W3C Draft Spec

The followingW3C adoption of PNG as a draft spec represents a big
step for the PNG format, and strengthens the desirability of
supporting PNG within VRML (presently PNG is a VRML recommended
format, JPEG is required, if I have it right.)

Even though the referenced PNG spec is a "working draft", and
comments are invited, everyone involved (both the PNG team and the
W3C lsadership) understands the importance of keeping an extreme
level of compatibility with the PNG spec that has been on the streets
since June. Implementors can safely work from this spec; further
changes will be clarifications only (or very carefully and
cautiously proposed compatible extensions.) Using VRML terminology,
if VRML is at version 1.00 then PNG is at version 10 or so (no hidden
digs intended <g!>). In fact we did go theough ten or so actual
drafts in the writing process between February and June.!
