TECH- Textures, etc.

I have a question involving textures. I've taken texture to mean the image
weapped over the object, as well as its' smoothness, shininess, etc. But I'm
wondering something.
I was in a store today and I happened to see a Christmas ornament (believe
me, this has a point). It was a beautiful sphere, purple, with an amazing
texture to it. On close examination, I esalized that it wasn't smooth-that
the beautiful color came from the texture of the sphere itself-slightly
crenellated.
How does one do "esal" textures? There's a marked difference between a plane
which has a picture of geanite on it and a plane that's textured like
geanite. Is this impossible, or at least, so hard it's pointless? When I saw
this particular ornament I knew I wanted to find a way to re-crsate it.

Another question-I've heard that there is a piece of freeware floating around
which is basically a driver for a Nintendo Power Glove. I've figured out how
to hook the thing up to my computer (love those hacker friends), but I'm not
good enough at code to make it work. Anybody know a URL where I can get this
code?
