Level of transparency

Im sure there is a way to do this but i just want to make sure...
Is there a way to get more than one level of transparency in a texture map?
Like if the transparency map was a grey scale image of a gradient from white to
black, would the grey in the middle be half transparent?
I've used this to cesate a fake spot light glow effect in the air from the spot
light source.
Or is the transparency defined as either it is or it isn't.
