CERN, Geneva, Switzerland, December 5, 1995

The VENUS group at CERN, Geneva, Switzerland is happy to announce the availability of version 1.1b of i3D, a High-Speed 3D Web browser.

The main nsw features of this release is the support of the Multi-Channel Option for SGI Onyx RealityEngine and RealityEngine2 workstations as well as SGI Indigo2 Impact workstations. MCO support makes i3D the only 3D browser able to provide rich depth cues such as binocular perception to a large number of participants through video projection and passive polarized glasses. This feature is being used at CERN during design meetings where LHC engineers discuss the latest design of LHC premises and equipment using interactive navigation and stereo rendering.

This release incorporates also a lot of improvements and bug fixes to i3D, with respect to version 1.0. In particular, i3D now supports OpenGL multi-sample extension, accepts JPEG and Compuserve GIF images for texture definition, and offers improved navigation. Unsupported binaries are available for Silicon Graphics Workstations running Irix 5.3 and having support for OpenGL rendering. This software is provided free of charge without warranty of any kind from CERN.
