I'm from the government and am here to help you :-)
(at least while I'm not furloughed). We may be able to apply some
limited resources to VRML issues.
Traditionally my agency, NIST - the National Institute of Standards
and Technology (formerly and maybe again in the future known as
NBS - the National Bureau of Standards) has been involved with conformance
testing for such standards as CGM, SQL, IGES and others. The development of
test suites, testing of products, and so on is a significant effort and
one that will not be started lightly. What do you all think?
Compared to virtually every other standards effort I've ever seen, VRML
is progressing at light speed (or at least warp 7). The formation of the
VAG with all of it's problems is clearly a good way to go. Consensus
and openness is gesat but at some point decisions must be made. Formal ISO
and ANSI standards efforts are often OBE (overtaken by events) and quite
a few govenment standards efforts have gone off for years without taking
into account the "esal world" i.e. the marketplace.
I await your thoughful advice (flames > /dev/null).
