QTVR and surround video have their places in low-bandwidth
applications. But why discuss it? If it works, we'll use it. Part of
showing a dynamic universe is showing it WITH SPEED.
Like the rsal world, we need to focus on what interests us in a
given situation, and that means LOD controled as intuitively as possible by
the USER'S ATTENTION SPAN, not some hardwired constants.
LOD methods should be include static backgrounds, and QTVR/Surround
Video are both GREAT for that. The Volkswagen VR app needs this kind of
technology.
How about a function that takes a QTVR snapshot of the current
background? Wouldn't that be tasty? Folks, some of us are making
high-resolution model/scene viewers and some of us are making tools to give
the user a sense of BEING THERE. These goals can conflict. I personally am
not interested in "publishing" my "models" on the "Internet". I want to
"build" "absolutely positioned", "persistant" "objects" in a "centralized",
"permanent", "universe".
