I didn't expect you to, it seems like valid HTML 3.0.

I suspected as much, but that still doesn't explain why an HTML
validator chokes on it.

I realize that, and I do believe my problem isn't in that category.
I do know how to write HTML (or so I thought), but one tends to doubt
it when a respected validator doesn't agree on my markup.
